Kunozan Toshogu Shrine
Learn
- From a young age, Tokugawa Ieyasu overcame many hardships and difficulties to become Shogun. He spent his later years in Sunpu (present-day Shizuoka City), and passed away on April 17, 1616, at the age of 75. Just before he died, Ieyasu left a will to his retainers that his remains be buried on Mount Kuno. The second Shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada, immediately carried out this order, and also issued an order to build a shrine on Mount Kuno to enshrine Ieyasu. This was the beginning of Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. Nakai Masakiyo was selected as the master carpenter, and construction began in May of the same year, with the shrine building being completed in one year and seven months. The "Gongen-zukuri" style, which brought together the finest architectural techniques and art of the time, became the template for the architecture of Toshogu shrines across the country, starting with Nikko Toshogu Shrine. During his lifetime, master carpenter Nakai Masakiyo worked on important structures that still remain today, such as Nagoya Castle (a nationally designated special historic site), Ninna-ji Temple (an important cultural property), and Nijo Castle (a national treasure and World Heritage site). Kunozan Toshogu Shrine was deemed a masterpiece created in his later years, and was designated a national treasure in 2010.
